The Art Therapy Credentials Board Examination (ATCBE) is a national exam taken for Board Certification and, in some cases, needed for state licensure. If you are taking the exam for state licensure in New York or Maryland please visit the state licensure page found here:
The exam is offered via computer-based testing (CBT). Two examinations forms are created annually. The first form is implemented from January through June, the second is implemented from July through December. All exam candidates can only take one examination on each form.
While ATCB does not provide or endorse study materials, we do offer a preparation guide to assist prospective examinees.
Computer-Based Testing (CBT)
The computer-based test is offered throughout the year at over 500 designated testing centers throughout the U.S. The application fee for the board certification exam is non-refundable and non-transferable. This fee covers the administrative costs of the examination and the application review.
There is no longer set testing windows for taking the ATCBE exam.
Any current ATR may apply to take the ATCBE for board certification. The application for the ATCBE is found on credential holders’ MYATCB portals.
If approved to take the ATCBE, applicants have a 6-month testing window and must work directly with Pearson Vue to schedule the exam* Additional information on this process is sent from Pearson Vue directly to applicants approved to take the exam. The ATCB does not schedule exams.
ATCBE results are available 8-12 weeks from the date of the exam and are uploaded to the examinee’s MYATCB accounts.

Please note that no examinee may take the ATCBE more than one time in a six-month period, whether for board certification or licensure. If you originally took the ATCBE between January 1 and June 30, you must wait until after July 1 to submit an application to retake the ATCBE. Likewise, if the ATCBE examination was taken between July 1 through December 30, applications to take retake the exam must be submitted after January 1. Individual states may have further restrictions regarding re-testing for licensure applicants. The ATCBE is available in at Pearson Vue testing centers in the United States.
