For ATRs Seeking Board Certification
ATRs Who Have Passed the ATCBE for State Licensure
Registered Art Therapists (ATRs) in good standing may apply for Board Certification (ATR-BC) through ATCB and a passing score on the Art Therapy Credentials Board Examination (ATCBE) is one of the requirements for those seeking certification. If you have passed the ATCBE for state licensure within the past three years (36 months) you may submit a copy of your ATCBE results along with the ATR-BC Application for ATRs Who Have Passed the ATCBE for State Licensure.
ATRs Who Do Not Have Qualifying ATCBE Scores
If you are an ATR who would like to become Board Certified (ATR-BC), if your ATR status is current and in good standing and you have not passed the ATCBE for state licensure within the past three years (36 months), you may apply for the ATR-BC using one of two applications, the Standard ATR-BC Application or the Board Certification Application for ATRs Planning to Participate in Computer-based Testing.
The Standard ATR-BC Application is for ATRs who would like to take the examination on the national examination date, in conjunction with the AATA conference and in a paper-pencil format. This exam is offered in several cities nation-wide one time per year and the basic fee is $235 or $260, depending on time of application. To take the ATCBE for Board Certification, an ATR must
- be a current ATR, in good standing with ATCB
- complete the Board Certification application, attach payment, and mail it in by the postmark deadline
The 2015 administration of the Art therapy Credentials Board Examination (ATCBE) is Scheduled for July 11, 2015 in the following cities:
|Minneapolis, MN (AATA Conference)|
|Baltimore, MD||New York, NY|

There is an additional opportunity for ATRs to take the ATCBE. This coincides with the Expressive Therapies Summit in New York, NY on November 8, 2014. Please return your completed Expressive Therapies Summit Exam Registration Form and payment by September 29th.
ATCB Special Examination Accommodations Policy
ATRs planning to take the ATCBE for the purpose of Board Certification (ATR-BC) needing special testing accommodations may refer to the Special Exam Accommodations Request Form on page 4 of the Standard ATR-BC Application for more information and instructions.
The Certification Application for ATRs Planning to Participate in Computer-based Testing offers testing dates and locations in addition to the national examination date and locations participating on those dates. Through this opportunity, ATRs may choose to test through a computer-based format at one of the 170 testing centers throughout the U.S. The application fee for this Board Certification application is $450. Special Exam Accommodation instructions are included in the application for those needing this information.

About the ATCB Job Analysis
Approximately every five years, according to psychometric best practices, the ATCB completes a national job analysis to provide a basis for the ongoing revision of the ATCBE, ensuring that the content of the examination is job related. The primary goal of this study, which is accomplished by surveying practicing credentialed art therapists in a broad range of settings, is to develop a base of art therapy job tasks as the structure for criterion-referenced examination development. Each form of the examination follows test specifications, thus providing evidence to support decisions regarding candidates' ability to perform the tasks currently expected of professional art therapists.
